Competitive Coaches

Posted May 6, 2018

The Vernon Soccer Club is a member of the Connecticut Junior Soccer Administration (CJSA) Northeast District. Because we are a CJSA affiliated club we are obligated to follow the rules set forth for travel teams by CJSA noted below. If you have any questions about these rules please contact the VSC Competitive Director.

Travel Coach Licensing Requirements

VSC is committed to coach development and requires all Head Travel Coaches to pursue the appropriate licensing as part of their coaching curriculum.

For U8-U10, VSC requires head coaches to purse a Grassroots 7v7 license (called E license prior to 2018) within 12 months of accepting a head coach position.
For U12, VSC requires head coaches to purse a Grassroots 9v9 (called E license prior to 2018) within 12 months of accepting a head coach position.
For U13 and above, VSC requires head coaches to purse a Grassroots 11v11 (called E license prior to 2018) within 12 months of accepting a head coach position.
VSC encourages all assistant coaches (and rec coaches) to pursue similiar licensing, particularly if they are interested in moving to a head coach position in the Travel Division. VSC seriously considers the licensing of applicants when selecting Head Coaches each year for the travel teams. Additionally, the VSC will pay for VSC coaches to obtain their D license as needed.

VSC's current policy is to reimburse coaches the cost of the certification as outlined below:

  • The VSC will reimburse any active* VSC Competitive Head Coach at a rate of 100% of the total cost of any professionally delivered soccer or injury preparedness related training with prior written approval by the Executive Board of Directors.
  • The VSC will reimburse any active* VSC Competitive Assistant Coach at a rate of 50% of the cost of any professionally delivered soccer or injury preparedness related training with prior written approval by the Executive Board of Directors.
  • The VSC will reimburse any active* VSC Recreational Head Coach at a rate of 50% of the total cost of obtaining their US Soccer "F" License or injury preparedness related training with prior written approval by the Executive Board of Directors.

* a coach is deemed to be active if they are actively involved as a VSC coach with the day-to-day operation of the team during the same season or session that they are completing training and requesting reimbursement and/or will be returning for the next season or session.

Proof of course payment (copy of credit card receipt/statement or canceled check), a copy of the state or national certificate, and the completed expense reimbursement form are required for reimbursement. Click here for the reimbursement form. Mail the completed and signed form, and supporting documentation, to Vernon Soccer Club, PO Box 2295, Vernon, CT 06066. The form will be reviewed and approved by an executive board member, and reimbursement will be sent to the address on the form. Please allow up to 4-6 weeks after the form and supporting documentation has been mailed to VSC for reimbursement.

Team Manager

Every Travel Team needs a team manager to assist the coaches with some of the administrative duties associated to the Travel Program. Any of these responsibilities can be divided up amongst various parents on the team. Please don't think as team manager - you need to do it all. Here is an outline of what a team manager is responsible for:

Complete CJSA Passes for all players, coaches and managers (Only needs to be done in the fall unless there are new spring players):

  • Once a CJSA roster is approved, the certified pass cards will be generated and provided to a team manager by the VSC registrar. These cards will only be generated when the roster can be certified. This means all birth certificates have been received, and all coaches, assistant coaches and managers have completed their background checks.
  • Background checks are good for 2 years so they don't necessarily need to be done each year. The link the the background check is found at www.cjsa.org.
  • The team manager needs to affix a 1" by 1" photo (facial shot) to each pass. A team manager can request pictures from people or take head shots. (The small school photos work well).
  • As of Travel 2012/2013 - passes no longer need to be signed so after the pictures are glued on, they can be laminated and given to the coach. These will be verified at all league games and many refs check them at friendly games as well. A suggestion is to punch a hole in the corner and place a metal ring through the entire pack of passes so they can easily be flipped through by a referee. A player will not be allowed to play without their pass nor will an adult without a pass be allowed on the team bench.
  • Along with the pre-printed CJSA player passes, VSC will provide to Team Manaers an official CJSA roster. Managers should make several copies of the certified roster - will be needed if you apply to tournaments.
